With the 28th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select Sylvester Williams, a senior DT from North Carolina. Now if you’re like me, the guy was not my first choice, but that’s not to say he is not one heck of a football player.
First off Sylvester Williams is 24 years old, listed at 6’3 and weighed in at 313lbs. That’s a big man! He has quite the life story as he worked a lot through high school doing various jobs even working at a factory, to then playing junior college football, to finally playing at UNC-Chapel Hill, and now is now a 1st round draft pick.
Watching videos, I really like his quickness and his initial burst off the ball. He also will definitely be able to disrupt plays and clog the gaps which is a key area that I’m glad the Broncos answered. It will be interesting to see if he can still be effective if and when he is double teamed. Furthermore, there is always a learning curve in the NFL, and if he can repeat the success Derek Wolfe had as a rookie I will be ecstatic.
Reports from the Denver Broncos draft war room say they felt Sylvester Williams was a great fit for their defense especially due to his size and they also felt he was a great character guy on and off the field. I personally will take a high character guy anytime. Overall, the Denver Broncos 1st round pick in 2013 NFL Draft is a player that has great potential to be a force in the league. After all the last DT the Denver Broncos took in the 1st round was Trevor Pryce back in 1997 and that worked out pretty well!
Sammy’s Draft Grade: B+
Outlook for rest of draft: I hope Denver address their needs at RB, S, and CB. The fun is only beginning. Two more exciting days wait as we find out who else will be donning the Blue and orange come September 4th!
