Emotions were high on Thursday night; the Denver Nuggets hosted the Dallas Mavericks at the Pepsi Center. Coming off the win in Utah the night before, Denver would be up against it, especially with a Mavericks team fighting for the 8th spot in the West. No Ty Lawson, no problem. Denver somehow scraped out a 95-94 win Thursday night for their 19th straight home victory!
The start of tonight’s game, was extraordinarily ugly for Denver as they came out really flat in the 1st quarter, and were sluggish on both sides of the ball. A lot of missed layups and uncontentested buckets for the Mavs allowed Dallas to take the early lead. Denver was fortunate to be down only 23-19 after the 1st, considering they missed their first 18 of 22 shots. The 2nd quarter was much better from Denver as they got back into their rhythm offensively.
However, all things took a bleak turn when Gallo fell awkwardly on his knee during a driving layup and had to be helped to the locker-room and did not return. Some big time three pointers allowed Denver to stay with the Mavs and at the half, the game was tied 47-47. Andre Miller, Gallo, and CBrew all had 9 points at the half. The 3 rd quarter was back and forth with either team really pulling away.
After the 3rd, the Mavs were up 77-70. The 4th quarter was one of the most exciting quarters of NBA basketball you will see. Denver really turned up their defense and hustle in the final quarter and that was the difference. Denver forced a huge turnover down by 1 with under 40 seconds remaining, but Faried missed both FT at the line but Denver got the rebound after the second miss. After a timeout, an Iggy drive and finger roll put Denver up 1 with 2.8 left and a CBrew block on an Anthony Morrow three at the buzzer capped off an incredible win 95-94.
Andre Miller finished with 22 points, CBrew had 23 points, Faried had a monster game with 12 points and 19 rebounds. Denver moved to 34-3 at home and 52-24 overall and host a tough Houston team on Saturday.
That’s all great, but like any Nuggets man I won’t sleep easy tonight considering Gallo will have an MRI on his knee in the morning. Unconfirmed reports say that Gallo heard a pop in his knee and that is NOT GOOD. If it is an ACL injury, this will be a devastating loss for Denver just as the playoffs are about to begin. The team will really have to dig in and everyone will be held accountable.
